What are acne scars and what are the available treatments ?

Acne scars are the direct consequence of an altered wound healing response to skin inflammation caused by acne. Severity of scarring is known to increase with long standing acne, hence early diagnosis and treatment of active acne is very important.

Depending on the type and severity of scar, skin type acne scar treatment can be planned.

    • Chemical peels are used to treat post acne hyperpigmentation and also improves appearance of superficial acne scars.
    • Microneedling for mild to moderate scars- this is done using dermarollers and dermapen.

Microneedling is a minimally invasive technique involving superficial and controlled puncturing of skin by miniature fine needles.

    • Microneedle radiofrequency fractional (MNRF)

MNRF is found to be effective in reducing atrophic acne scars and open pores. In addition to controlled penetration of needles, radiofrequency energy disrupts the dermal fibrotic strands and triggers collagen remodelling. MNRF requires 4-6 sessions for optimal results.

    • Ablative laser resurfacing

Fractional C02 and Er : YAG lasers are used and have higher efficacy in management of scars.

    • Subcision

This is a simple technique for the elevation of depressed scars by introducing the needle beneath the scar, which breaks the fibrous adhesions and lifts the scar. This is most useful in rolling scars.

    • Platelet rich plasma therapy

Platelet rich plasma therapy is used to treat atrophic scars by promoting formation of healthy collagen and skin growth factors.

Complete resolution of acne scars is rarely achieved. Combining different treatment, either sequentially or in the same session, has shown better results.
